85th DUN LAOGHAIRE HARBOUR RACE

Sunday 10th August
Men’s Race 11.00am
Ladies’ Race 12.00pm

The 85th Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race takes place on Sunday August 10th 2014. The men’s race is at 11am and the ladies’ race at 12pm. Last year, over 250 men and women qualified to enter the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race and it is anticipated that there will be 300 swimmers this year.

Each weekend from June to September the swimming club of Leinster run open sea swimming races along the coast of Leinster. Theses are held at well known swimming locations such as Malahide, Portmarnock, Howth, Clontarf, South Wall, Seapoint, Dun Laoghaire, Sandycove, Killiney and Bray. These form the Leinster Open Sea Calendar. In order to qualify to swim in the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race, swimmers must have completed 4 open sea races from the Open Sea Calendar before closing date. The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race along with the Dublin City Liffey Swim are rightly considered the two most prestigious swimming races in Ireland. For swimmers winning the Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race is akin to winning an All Ireland Final.

The Dun Laoghaire Harbour Race caters to swimmers as young as 14 years right up to ages the swimmers perhaps prefer not to disclose! A wide range of ages and abilities take part in the race. Both the Open Sea Committee and the swimming club warmly welcome newcomers to our sport no matter their age or their ability.

The race comprises a swim around the circumference of Dun Laoghaire Harbour battling fellow swimmers, reaching marker buoys, avoiding any number of obstacles and taking on the might that is the Irish Sea.

[list style=”arrow” ]
  • Stina O’Neill
  • Robert Delaney Band

  • VANN MUSIC

In April, Dún Laoghaire Harbour came alive for the first Musical Festival of the summer. Three bands performed from early afternoon and attracted large crowds to Dún Laoghaire. Businesses on the waterfront promenade enjoyed increased custom while Irish musicians reached out to a whole new audience.

Speaking ahead of the second Festival, Lloyd Barber, Festival promoter, said, “The feedback from the first festival was absolutely fantastic with all bands delivering great performances. The location was stunning and we’ve had a great afternoon of sun. The surrounding businesses were all very busy as their customers sat outside and were entertained for free making it a great day for all. Our next show has a brilliant line up with a selection of bands that will appeal to every taste in music; from singer-song writers Stina O’Neill and Robert Delaney and local rock band CRASH delivering a great selection of originals and covers to the up and coming stars the new wave electro band VANN MUSIC.”

The Dún Laoghaire Harbour Music Festival is supported by Dún Laoghaire Harbour Company, Dún Laoghaire Business Association and Lycamobile.

Global Diaspora Forum

Tuesday 14th and Wednesday 15th May 2013

The Global Diaspora Forum is a celebration of diaspora communities. The forum has been held annually in Washington and, this year, it will run simultaneously in Washington and Dublin.

The Global Diaspora Forum was inspired by former US Secretary of State, Hillary Clinton, and is coordinated by the US-based charity, the International Global Diaspora Engagement Alliance (IdEA).

The purpose of the forum is to challenge diaspora communities to forge partnerships with the private sector, civil society and public institutions in order to make their engagements with their countries of origin or ancestry effective and sustainable.

The Global Diaspora Forum is targeted at leaders of diaspora communities; politicians and policymakers; private sector stakeholders; representatives of international institutions; foundation executives; academic experts; and members of not-for-profit organisations.

The theme for the 2013 Global Diaspora Forum is ‘Diasporas in Action’. It is being held in Dublin to mark the Irish presidency of the European Union, and in recognition of the increased focus which the EU has on diaspora matters.

The European strand of the Global Diaspora Forum is being organised by the Irish International Diaspora Centre Trust, which is working to deliver a world-class diaspora centre in Dublin.

Website will be fully operational over the coming weeks at the link www.globaldiasporaforum.ie.
